Advanced SEO
The Advanced SEO plugin puts your store’s search-engine metadata in your hands. Without it, titles and descriptions are generated automatically from your product and category names. With it, you set the rules once — and override any product, category, or page where you want something more specific.
Install it from Plugins → Advanced SEO → Enable. It is free.
What it controls
- Page titles and meta descriptions for your home page, products, categories, and content/landing pages.
- Search-engine verification (Google Search Console, Bing).
- Social sharing previews (Open Graph image, X/Twitter handle).
robots.txtandsitemap.xmlbehaviour.- Hiding pages from search (noindex), per item or for the whole store.
Title templates
Open Plugins → Advanced SEO. Under Settings you’ll find a template per page type. Templates use simple variables in curly braces:
| Variable | Means |
|---|---|
{title} | the product / category / page name |
{store_name} | your store name |
{sep} | the separator you set (default ` |
{tagline} | your store description (home page) |
{category} | the product’s category |
{price} | the product price |
{count} | number of products in a category |
The default product template is {title} {sep} {store_name}, which produces
Cotton Panjabi | Your Store. If you leave a token blank, the extra separator is
removed automatically — you’ll never see Title | | Store.
Per-product and per-category SEO
On any product (or category) edit screen, the plugin adds an SEO panel:
- SEO title — replaces the template for that item. Recommended 60 characters or fewer.
- Meta description — the snippet search engines show. Recommended 160 characters or fewer.
- Social image — the image used when the page is shared.
- Canonical URL override — advanced; only for duplicate or filtered URLs.
- Hide this product/category from search engines — removes it from search and from your sitemap.
Content pages and landing pages use their existing SEO title / SEO description fields; the plugin applies your page template when those are left empty.
Verification and social
- Paste your Google Search Console and Bing verification codes to verify the site.
- Set a default social image and an X/Twitter handle so shared links look right.
Sitemap and robots
- Toggle Publish sitemap.xml on or off, and choose whether product images are included.
- Add extra robots.txt disallow lines (one path per line).
- Hide entire store from search engines adds
Disallow: /, drops the sitemap reference, and serves an empty sitemap.
Previewing your changes
The plugin dashboard shows a live preview: pick a page type, type a sample title, and see exactly how the result looks in Google and on social media — including character counters. The preview runs the same logic the live page uses, so what you see is what search engines get.
Good to know
- Turning the plugin off restores the automatic titles and descriptions — nothing is lost, and your overrides are kept if you turn it back on.
- Only one SEO plugin should be enabled at a time.
- If you’re unsure, leave the templates at their defaults and only fill in per-item titles/descriptions for the pages that matter most.
